This poster and the other variations of it, which depict the famous Black Cat, were drawn by the Art Nouveau artist Theophile Alexandre Steinlen. Le Chat Noir in Montmartre, Paris, was opened in 1881 by artist Rodolphe Salis who is credited with creating the first cabaret. Le Chat Noir was the most unique and exciting place in Paris at the time. Salis had the then innovative idea of taking his show on a tour of France, for which most of the Black Cat posters were designed for. This poster reads: 'Coming soon the very illustrious company of the Black Cat with its selections of famous Shadowpuppets, its Poets, its Composers with Roldophe Salis.'
